Nigerian Cultural Awareness

Cross Cultural Awareness and Inclusive Working for Care Teams:

In 2026, McKenzie has been privileged to work with a number of different adult and children’s care providers to design team initiatives and training to promote effective cross cultural working between both British staff and workers from overseas.

Working in partnership with both British and Nigerian colleagues we have effectively deconstructed the key differences between the two nations with the aim of understanding how we can effectively promote a more inclusive working environment for everyone. The events are interactive, fun, delivered sensitively and can really help to resolve some of the key cultural clashes you may occasionally expect to see in the workplace.

Typical Event Overview:

  • Event introduction highlighting your internal and external commitments to Inclusion and Cross Cultural Working.

  • Presentation and group discussions exploring some key cultural changes that have occurred in the UK during the last thirty years impacting on social attitudes/norms. Examples include population diversity, public cultural confidence, mental wellbeing awareness, Equality laws, same sex relationships, sustainability considerations as part of daily life, religion, approaches to parenting, inclusion awareness, shifting work styles, workplace legislation, digital communications and cross-cultural working.

  • Introductory questionnaire exploring important terms for this event. These include the correct definitions of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Cross Cultural Working.

  • Exercise and discussion. Introduction to the key elements that make up cultural differences across the globe and between Britain and Nigeria and how these differences (which may be a departure from British norms) can sometimes be evident within working styles and communication. Examples include; language, diet, pace of working, body language, respect for hierarchy, family structures/values, parenting styles, verbal communications/expressions and understanding of mental health & disabilities.

  • Interactive case analysis examining real and recent examples of cultural misunderstandings at work. For each case, delegates discuss (in smaller syndicate groups) what happened and what could have happened differently.

  • Case study discussions and presentation of ‘model answers’ for each case.

  • Skills for promoting cultural inclusion at work. Delegates examine (and receive a copy of) a virtual toolbox which explores the essential, knowledge, skills and language required to promote cultural inclusion at work. The toolbox also includes the skills and language required to encourage others to reflect on their behaviour / language when it is felt that Inclusion is not being effectively promoted.

  • A reminder of your values and expectations of everyone in the areas of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

  • Next steps exercise. As a result of attending this event, what do we, as a functional team, commit to (i)  Start doing ? and (ii) Stop doing ?

The events can be delivered both virtually or face to face and usually comprise a half day event for up to 15 people.
